Regulatory Body
The Intellectual Property Department at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce is the competent administration that governs patents in the State of Qatar.
Legal Framework
The law regulating Patents in Qatar is Decree Law No. 30 of the year 2006 issuing the Patents Law, which entered into force on December 12, 2006.
The Minister of Economy and Trade adopted the implementing regulations of the aforementioned Patent Laws on May 1, 2018, per Decision No. 153 (of 2018).
Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
The accession of Qatar to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) sanctioned by Decree No. 36 of 2011 (36/2011) took place upon the ratification of accession to the PCT on May 3, 2011 and entered into force on August 3, 2011.
Filing Options
There are two ways in which a patent can be filed in Qatar:
- 1.National Filing at the Qatar Patent Office. Priority can be claimed within 12 months of the first application (Paris Convention).
- 2.National Phase of PCT application, within 30 months from the priority date.
Other Info
- PCT National Phase: Acceptable within 30 months from the date of initial filing.
- Priority Term: Within 12 months from the priority filing date.
- Protection period: 20 years from the date of filing the application or from the international filing date for the national phase entry of PCT applications.
- Annual fees: Annuities are paid before the anniversary of the national filing date for non-PCT applications. For PCT national phase applications, annuities must be paid well before the anniversary of the international filing date.

- 1. A copy of the specification in English and Arabic in MS Word format including the Abstract, claims, and drawings (if any).
- General Information Required:
- Name and address of the applicant(s).
- Name and address of the inventor(s).
- Details of the Priority Application(s).
Supporting Documents
- A Power of Attorney executed by the applicant(s), duly notarized and legalized up to Qatari Consulate.
- Deed of Assignment (if applicable) executed by the inventor(s), duly notarized and legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
- 3. An extract from the Commercial Register or Certificate of Incorporation, duly legalized up to the Qatari Consulate. For Individual applicants, a passport copy of the applicant is required.
- 4. A certified copy of the priority document(s) along with its Arabic translation.
